This paper presents a numerical benchmark study of wave propagation due to a paddle motion using different high-fidelity numerical models, which are capable of replicating the nearly actual physical wave tank testing. A full time series of the measured wave generation paddle motion that was used to generate wave propagation in the physical wave tank will be utilized in each of the models contributed by the participants of International Energy Agency Ocean Energy Systems Task 10, which includes both computational fluid dynamics and smoothed particle hydrodynamics models. The high-fidelity simulations of the physical wave test case will allow for the evaluation of the initial transient effects from wave ramp-up and its evolution in the wave tank over time for two representative regular waves with varying levels of nonlinearity. Metrics like the predicted wave surface elevation at select wave probes, wave period, and phase-shift in time will be assessed to evaluate the relative accuracy of numerical models versus experimental data within specified time intervals. These models will serve as a guide for modelers in the wave energy community and provide a base case to allow further and more detailed numerical modeling of the fixed Kramer Sphere Cases under wave excitation force wave tank testing.
To achieve IMO’s goal of a 50% reduction of GHG emission by 2050 (compared to the 2008 levels), shipping must not only work towards an optimization of each ship and its components but aim for an optimization of the complete marine transport system, including fleet planning, harbour logistics, route planning, speed profiles, weather routing and ship design. ShipCLEAN, a newly developed model, introduces a coupling of a marine transport economics model to a sophisticated ship energy systems model – it provides a leap towards a holistic optimization of marine transport systems. This paper presents how the model is applied to propose a reduction in fuel consumption and environmental impact by speed reduction of a container ship on a Pacific Ocean trade and the implementation of wind assisted propulsion on a MR Tanker on a North Atlantic trade. The main conclusions show that an increase of the fuel price, for example by applying a bunker levy, will lead to considerable, economically motivated speed reductions in liner traffic. The case study sowed possible yearly fuel savings of almost 21 300 t if the fuel price would be increased from 300 to 1000 USD/t. Accordingly, higher fuel prices can motivate the installation of wind assisted propulsion, which potentially saves up to 500 t of fuel per year for the investigated MR Tanker on a transatlantic route.
Wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP) technology seems to be a promising solution toward accelerating the shipping industry’s decarbonization efforts as it uses wind to replace part of the propulsive power generated from fossil fuels. This article discusses the status quo of the WASP technological growth within the maritime transport sector by means of a secondary data review analysis, presents the potential fuel-saving implications, and identifies key factors that shape the operational efficiency of the technology. The analysis reveals three key considerations. Firstly, despite the existing limited number of WASP installations, there is a promising trend of diffusion of the technology within the industry. Secondly, companies can achieve fuel savings, which vary depending on the technology installed. Thirdly, these bunker savings are influenced by environmental, on-board, and commercial factors, which presents both opportunities and challenges to decision makers.
We present a depth-integrated Boussinesq model for the efficient simulation of nonlinear wave–body interaction. The model exploits a ‘unified’ Boussinesq framework, i.e. the fluid under the body is also treated with the depth-integrated approach. The unified Boussinesq approach was initially proposed by Jiang (2001) and recently analyzed by Lannes (2017). The choice of Boussinesq-type equations removes the vertical dimension of the problem, resulting in a wave–body model with adequate precision for weakly nonlinear and dispersive waves expressed in horizontal dimensions only. The framework involves the coupling of two different domains with different flow characteristics. Inside each domain, the continuous spectral/hp element method is used to solve the appropriate flow model since it allows to achieve high-order, possibly exponential, convergence for non-breaking waves. Flux-based conditions for the domain coupling are used, following the recipes provided by the discontinuous Galerkin framework. The main contribution of this work is the inclusion of floating surface-piercing bodies in the conventional depth-integrated Boussinesq framework and the use of a spectral/hp element method for high-order accurate numerical discretization in space. The model is verified using manufactured solutions and validated against published results for wave–body interaction. The model is shown to have excellent accuracy and is relevant for applications of waves interacting with wave energy devices.
This paper explores the application of modular multi-level converters (MMC) as a means for harnessing the power from off-shore wind power plants. The MMC consists of a large number of simple voltage sourced converter (VSC) submodules
that can be easily assembled into a converter for high-voltage and high power. The paper shows that the MMC converter has a fast response and low harmonic content in comparison with a two-level VSC option. The paper discusses the modeling approach used, including a solution to the modeling challenge imposed by the very large number of switching devices in the MMC.
Recent times have seen a great interest on environmental issues and efficient, sustainable systems. This interest has required the employment of advanced composites for a myriad of industrial machines and innovative equipments. Among these applications, Flywheel Energy Storage Systems – FESS – represent a group of machines that are being re-invented through this process. Modeling composite flywheels has proven to be a complex task, which current Finite Element models fail to fulfill in a number of design contexts. This demand to model complex composite geometries and systems induced the proposition of new methods, aiming to capture the various physical effects existing in the problem. In the present contribution, the authors consider that it is viable to model the dynamic behavior of a Flywheel Energy Storage System via an adapted Carrera Unified Formulation, both in terms of accuracy and computational cost, for practical applications. The present work presents and explores a Carrera Unified Formulation model with extended capabilities dedicated to rotordynamics applications. The differences from standard Finite Elements models are presented, evidencing advantages and drawbacks of the proposed methodology over more traditional approaches. A case study is then presented, modeled, and the results are compared with those stemming from established formulations.

Ice-breaking cones are commonly used in the design of marine structures in cold regions. This study investigates the effects of higher-harmonic wave loads and wave runup on a 5-MW offshore wind turbine with and without ice-breaking cones under extreme wave conditions on the Liaodong Peninsula in China. Two ice-breaking cones (upward-downward and inverted types) are considered. The numerical model adopts a two-phase flow by solving unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations using the volume of fluid (VOF) method. A phase decomposition method through a ‘Stokes-like’ formulation was adopted to obtain the parameters for each harmonics. The presence of the conical part is seen to increase the second-harmonic wave loads by up to 40%, but it has only limited influence on the fourth and fifth harmonics. The upward-downward-type ice-breaking cone increases the third harmonic, while the inverted-type ice-breaking cone decreases the third harmonic. Due to the phase difference between the first-harmonic and higher harmonics, the largest wave runup occurs at 0°, and 135° is the location with the smallest wave runup. This is because at the 135-degree location, the linear component is positive but the other nonlinear components are negative. For the 0-degree location, all harmonics are positive. By contrast, the inverted type has little effect. The high harmonic wave runup of the minimum point is backwards compared with that of the monopile, and most nonlinear wave runups are different upstream of the monopile.
The wave loads and the resulting motions of floating wave energy converters are traditionally computed using linear radiation–diffraction methods. Yet for certain cases such as survival conditions, phase control and wave energy converters operating in the resonance region, more complete mathematical models such as computational fluid dynamics are preferred and over the last 5 years, computational fluid dynamics has become more frequently used in the wave energy field. However, rigorous estimation of numerical errors, convergence rates and uncertainties associated with computational fluid dynamics simulations have largely been overlooked in the wave energy sector. In this article, we apply formal verification and validation techniques to computational fluid dynamics simulations of a passively controlled point absorber.
The phase control causes the motion response to be highly nonlinear even for almost linear incident waves. First, we show that the computational fluid dynamics simulations have acceptable agreement to experimental data. We then present a verification and validation study focusing on the solution verification covering spatial and temporal discretization, iterative and domain modelling errors. It is shown that the dominating source of errors is, as expected, the spatial discretization, but temporal and iterative errors cannot be neglected. Using hexahedral cells with low aspect ratio and 30 cells per wave height, we obtain results with less than 5% uncertainty in motion response (except for surge) and restraining forces for the buoy without phase control. The amplified nonlinear response due to phase control caused a large increase in numerical uncertainty, illustrating the difficulty to obtain reliable solutions for highly nonlinear responses, and that much denser meshes are required for such cases.
