In this video, Professor Christian Schlette (SDU Robotics) talks about the IFD-funded project ShipWeldFlow, where they develop novel digital analysis and optimization tools to support the workflow of robotic welding in shipbuilding operations. They use Digital Twins to address the needs of two companies, Odense Maritime Technology and Inrotech, by the joint development of the required digital tools to innovate the central workflow in modern steel ship production. Based on the Digital Twins, we aim for tackling the essential questions of how shipyard investments in robotic welding solutions can increase efficiency and reduce costs of producing a given ship design, how ship redesigns can lead to material and waste reduction, and how robotic welding solutions can be improved to yield better welding performance for customer-specific ship designs. The waterways and high seas in and around Denmark have been more or less systematically mapped since the renaissance. However, old naval and maritime charts are rarely the precise instruments of navigation and orientation we are used to, and often many other aspects of the coastline are included in the maps. These old maps also do not concur to contemporary navigational grids and coordinate systems which makes comparisons with modern information difficult.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the so-called Initial IMO Strategy in 2018, stipulating that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping need to be reduced by at least 50% by 2050, and CO2 emissions per transport work are to be reduced by at least 40% by the year 2030, both compared to the 2008 levels.
At the same time, there is an elephant in the room: It is the intent of the European Commission and the European Parliament to include shipping into the EU ETS. How the elephant will be handled is not clear. In this talk we will outline the main decarbonization challenges through a focus on a RoPax case study.
