We present the results of a numerical model which has been developed for estimating the contribution to the methane slip from different sources in a four-stroke dual-fuel marine engine running on natural gas. The model is a thermodynamic three-zone zero-dimensional full engine cycle model and considers methane slip contributions from short-circuiting, crevices and wall quenching. The model is applied to analyze the methane slip from a four-stroke dual-fuel medium speed marine engine using natural gas as primary fuel. At low loads, wall quenching is found to be the dominant contribution to the methane slip. At full load, the wall quenching contribution is comparable to the level of the short-circuiting and crevice contributions which only vary relatively little with load. At 75% load, the contribution from short-circuiting is highest. In addition, we found that in-cylinder post-oxidation of unburned fuel remaining after the main combustion is negligible.
Over the recent decades, there has been an increasing focus on energy-efficient operation of vessels. It has become part of the political agenda, where regulation is the main driver, but the maritime industry itself has also been driven towards more energy-efficient operation of the vessels, due to increasing fuel costs. Improving the energy efficiency on board vessels is not only a technical issue - factors such as awareness of the problem, knowledge skills and motivation are also important parameters that must be considered.
The paper shows how training in energy-efficient operation and awareness can affect the energy consumption of vessels. The study is based on navigational, full-mission simulator tests conducted at the International Maritime Academy SIMAC. A full-mission simulator is an image of the world allowing the students to obtain skills through learning-by-doing in a safe environment. Human factors and technical issues were included and the test sessions consisted of a combination of practical simulator exercises and reflection workshops.
The result of the simulator tests showed that a combination of installing technical equipment and raising awareness - making room for reflections-on and in-action - has a positive effect on energy consumption. The participants, on average, saved approximately 10% in fuel.
This work presents the verification and validation of the freely available simulation tool MoodyMarine, developed to help meet some of the demands for early stage development of MRE devices. MoodyMarine extends the previously released mooring module MoodyCore (Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Elements) with linear radiation-diffraction bodies, integrated pre-processing workflows and a graphical user interface. It is a C++ implementation of finite element mooring dynamics and Cummins equations for floating bodies with weak nonlinear corrections. A newly developed nonlinear Froude-Krylov implementation is verified in the paper, and MoodyMarine is compared to CFD simulations for two complex structures: a slack-moored floating offshore wind turbine and a self-reacting point-absorber with hybrid mooring.
This paper analyzes the nonlinear forces on a moored point-absorbing wave energy converter (WEC) in resonance at prototype scale (1:1) and at model scale (1:16). Three simulation types were used: Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS), Euler and the linear radiation-diffraction method (linear). Results show that when the wave steepness is doubled, the response reduction is: (i) 3% due to the nonlinear mooring response and the Froude-Krylov force; (ii) 1-4% due to viscous forces; and (iii) 18-19% due to induced drag and non-linear added mass and radiation forces. The effect of the induced drag is shown to be largely scale-independent. It is caused by local pressure variations due to vortex generation below the body, which reduces the total pressure force on the hole. Euler simulations are shown to be scale-independent and the scale effects of the WEC are limited by the purely viscous contribution (1-4%) for the two waves studied. We recommend that experimental model scale test campaigns of WECs should be accompanied by RANS simulations, and the analysis complemented by scale-independent Euler simulations to quantify the scale-dependent part of the nonlinear effects.
Offshore grids can play key roles in the transition of energy systems toward sustainability. Although they require extensive infrastructure investments, they allow for the exploitation of additional resources and may be important in providing for part of the increasing electricity demands driven by sector coupling. This paper quantifies the socioeconomic value of offshore grids and identifies their major drivers, performing energy system optimization in a model application of the northern–central European energy system and the North Sea offshore grid towards 2050. The increasing wake loss with the sizes of hub-connected wind farms is integrated in the modeling. We find that without sector coupling no offshore grid may develop, and that the higher the level of sector coupling, the higher the value of offshore grids. Therefore, it can be strongly stated that offshore grid infrastructure development should not be discussed as a separate political topic, but seen in connection to sector coupling.
Hydrogen can be key in the energy system transition. We investigate the role of offshore hydrogen generation in a future integrated energy system. By performing energy system optimisation in a model application of the Northern-central European energy system and the North Sea offshore grid towards 2050, we find that offshore hydrogen generation may likely only play a limited role, and that offshore wind energy has higher value when sent to shore in the form of electricity. Forcing all hydrogen generation offshore would lead to increased energy system costs. Under the assumed scenario conditions, which result in deep decarbonisatiton of the energy system towards 2050, hydrogen generation – both onshore and offshore – follows solar PV generation patterns. Combined with hydrogen storage, this is the most cost-effective solution to satisfy future hydrogen demand. Overall, we find that the role of future offshore hydrogen generation should not simply be derived from minimising costs for the offshore sub-system, but by also considering the economic value that such generation would create for the whole integrated energy system. We find as a no-regret option to enable and promote the integration of offshore wind in onshore energy markets via electrical connections.
Offshore wind power offers a viable solution to the challenge of reducing fossil fuel dependency. However, certain offshore wind projects encounter challenges in meeting expected returns, particularly over the medium to long term. This study addresses the discrepancy between assumed and actual cost behaviors in techno-economic assessments of wind farm projects. The present study evaluates their impact of operational loss trends (eg increased failure rates, aging, potential curtailment) on project viability through a comprehensive techno-economic assessment. To this end, key metrics including Net Present Value and Levelized Cost of Energy, complemented by stochastic analyzes are explored through Monte Carlo Simulation and sensitivity analysis. Results indicate that costs may exceed those of the reference scenario by up to 21.6% in the worst-case scenario, highlighting the critical need for proactive monitoring and management of operational losses.
As more offshore wind energy projects are implemented, the risk of interactions between farms becomes more pronounced. While reduced surface roughness over water enhances airflow stability, it can also extend wake effects on downstream turbines. The study aims to enhance the understanding of wake interactions and efficiency variations based on the distance between neighboring farms. To assess the impact of neighboring farms across different scenarios and features, a methodology is developed to achieve computational optimality using an open-source Python-based library, PyWake, then verified by a well-established CFD software, Meteodyn. Then, the methodology is applied to a Brazilian offshore wind project currently under licensing as a reference point. The results indicate a 1–3% reduction in Annual Energy Production following the current Brazilian regulation for onshore projects of 20 times the blade tip height, as the minimum distance. This reduction translates to an approximate 3% increase in the Levelized Cost of Energy and a nearly 24% decrease in Net Present Value. These findings are crucial for offshore wind energy planning and its sustainable growth, indicating the need to define a minimum distance for the regulatory bodies. This would not only avoid future disputes but also enhance investor confidence.
Nowadays, sea traveling is increasing due to its practicality and low-cost. Ferry boats play a significant role in the marine tourism industry to transfer passengers and tourists. Nevertheless, traditional ferry ships consume massive amounts of fossil fuels to generate the required energy for their motors and demanded loads. Also, by consuming fossil fuels, ferries spatter the atmosphere with CO2 emissions and detrimental particles. In order to address these issues, ferry-building industries try to utilize renewable energy sources (RESs) and energy storage systems (ESSs), instead of fossil fuels, to provide the required power in the ferry boats. In general, full-electric ferry (FEF) boats are a new concept to reduce the cost of fossil fuels and air emissions. Hence, FEF can be regarded as a kind of dc stand-alone microgrid with constant power loads (CPLs). This article proposes a new structure of a FEF ship based on RESs and ESSs. In order to solve the negative impedance induced instabilities in dc power electronic based RESs, a new intelligent single input interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller based on sliding mode control is proposed for the dc-dc converters feeding CLPs. The main feature of the suggested technique is that it is mode-free and regulates the plant without requiring the knowledge of converter dynamics. Finally, we conduct a dSPACE-based real-time experiment to examine the effectiveness of the proposed energy management system for FEF vessels.
We consider a strategic infrastructure and tanker fleet sizing problem in the liquefied natural gas business. The goal is to minimize long-term on-shore infrastructure and tanker investment cost combined with interrelated expected cost for operating the tanker fleet. A non-linear arc-based model and an exact solution method based on a set-partitioning formulation are developed. The latter approach allows very fast solution times. Computational results for a case study with a liner shipping company are presented, including an extensive sensitivity analysis to account for limited predictability of key parameter values, to analyze the solutions’ robustness and to derive basic decision rules.
