Extreme Wave Run-Up Loads on Monopile Appurtenances: A Practical Guide

Ana Bermejo Jimenez, Jesper Skourup, Thomas Lykke Andersen, Karsten Garborg, Louise Ankerstjerne Rolland

Monopiles are often the preferred foundation concept for an offshore wind turbine. The interaction between extreme waves and the large diameter monopile will in some cases result in a vertical jet of water uprush on the monopile (i.e., wave run-up) which subsequently may lead to large slamming loads on monopile appurtenances like the external working platform.

Extreme wave run-up interaction with an external working platform is often an area of concern during the design phase of an offshore wind project as an overly conservative assessment of the run-up loads may lead to unneeded costs in material and an increased project carbon footprint. An insufficient assessment of the run-up loads may lead to structural failure of the appurtenances and subsequent costly maintenance and repair works, further exacerbated by possibly difficult access to the damaged platform.

The practical process in the assessment of wave run-up on monopiles and associated loads on appurtenances can be a challenge to the designer due to lack of guidance on this topic in governing standards. The designer may then have to rely on several sources of available literature and must assess and include the effect of associated uncertainties like: Adjustment to site specific environmental conditions, unclear or unconcise terminology in the literature, lack of model test results representing the actual geometry and limited knowledge of spatial and temporal run-up load distribution on the appurtenances.

The aim of the present paper is to describe a complete methodology for assessment of wave run-up on monopiles and associated loads on appurtenances. The methodology, which will serve as a practical guide, is based on a collection of existing methods with new analysis to consider the pressure distribution on modern asymmetric grated platforms. This was based on experiences gained and challenges encountered during a detail design project of a monopile foundation for an offshore wind turbine in extreme environmental conditions. The sensitivity of the run-up assessment related to the design input (water depth, wave height and period, associated water level and current conditions) is discussed by considering a matrix with various environmental input combinations representing extreme environmental conditions.

Facilitating Large-Amplitude Motions of Wave Energy Converters in OpenFOAM by a Modified Mesh Morphing Approach

Johannes Palm & Claes Eskilsson

High-fidelity simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for wave-body interaction are becoming increasingly common and important for wave energy converter (WEC) design. The open source finite volume toolbox OpenFOAM® is one of the most frequently used platforms for wave energy. There are currently two ways to account for moving bodies in OpenFOAM: (i) mesh morph-ing, where the mesh deforms around the body; and (ii) an overlooked mesh method where a separate body mesh moves on top of a background mesh. Mesh morphing is computationally efficient but may introduce highly deformed cells for combinations of large translational and rotational motions. The overlooked method allows for arbitrarily large body motions and retains the quality of the mesh. However, it comes with a substantial increase in computational cost and possible loss of energy conservation due to the interpolation. In this paper we present a straightforward extension of the spherical linear interpolation (SLERP) based mesh morphing algorithm that increases the stability range of the method. The mesh deformation is allowed to be interpolated independently for different modes of motion, which facilitates tailored mesh motion simulations. The paper details the implementation of the method and evaluates its performance with computational examples of a cylinder with a moonpool. The examples show that the modified mesh morphing approach handles large motions well and provides a cost effective alternative to overlooked mesh for survival conditions.

Samlet set er rapporten inddelt i fire kapitler, der fokuserer på forskellige pointer. I kapitel 1 sammenlignes omkostningerne ved at producere en enhed (MWh) el fra henholdsvis atomkraft, sol og vind uafhængigt af resten af energisystemet;

Fatigue and workload among Danish fishermen

Line Nørgaard Remmen, Kimmo Herttua, Jørgen Riss-Jepsen, Gabriele Berg-Beckhoff

BACKGROUND: Fishery is a hazardous occupation and fatigue may contribute to the observed risks. This study aims to investigate the association between workload and fatigue among Danish fishermen.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cross-sectional survey of demographic characteristics and self-reported exposure and health data was performed on a random sample of 270 active fishermen. We applied the validated Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) to assess the degrees of the different dimensions of perceived fatigue. We estimated physical workload using questions regarding the frequency of seven physical work activities and analysed the association between fatigue and workload using multiple linear regressions.

RESULTS: The mean fatigue scores were 9.18 (SD 3.58) for general fatigue, 9.05 (SD 3.36) for physical fatigue, 7.57 (SD 3.03) for reduced activity and 7.16 (SD 3.07) for mental fatigue. Highest levels of fatigue were observed among fishermen at Danish seiners (mean 10.21), and fatigue scores decreased with more days at sea. However, none of these results were significant. Adjusted analyses showed that physical workload was significantly related to general fatigue (b = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.12-0.28), physical fatigue (b = 0.10, 95% CI: 0.04-0.16) and mental fatigue (b = 0.09, 95% CI: 0.01-0.16). Reduced activity was unrelated to work exposures.

CONCLUSIONS: General fatigue was the dominant fatigue dimension among Danish fishermen and it is mostly associated with physical workload. Physical workload was additionally significantly associated to the levels of physical and mental fatigue. Fishermen had a lower average score for all fatigue dimensions compared to those seen in general Danish working population. Prospective studies are required to assess whether the identified associations are causal.

Fatigue in ferry shipping employees: the role of work-family conflict and supervisor support

Solveig Boeggild Dohrmann*, Kimmo Herttua, Anja Leppin

Background: Fatigue is a concern in ferry shipping as it has a negative impact on crew members health and plays a major role in marine incidents and accidents. Research within land-based occupational settings has found that work-family conflict is an important risk factor for fatigue and that support from leaders constitutes a possible resource with the potential to buffer a negative impact from work-family conflict. Though, the working conditions of ferry shipping are likely to interfere with employee's family life those two factors have received little attention in research on seafarers' health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the direct associations between work-family conflict as well as leaders' support with fatigue in employees of the Danish ferry shipping industry. Further, the study aimed at testing whether support could buffer potential detrimental associations between work-family conflict and fatigue. Methods: The study design was cross-sectional, and 193 respondents answered to a self-administered questionnaire. Fatigue was measured with the Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory. Perceived work-family conflict and perceived supervisor support were assessed with two subscales from the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire. The association of potential risk factors with fatigue was determined using hierarchical multiple linear regression analyses. Results: After controlling for confounding, work-family conflict was found to be positively associated with four of the five subdimensions of fatigue; lack of energy, physical discomfort, lack of motivation and sleepiness, while more support from supervisors was related to less lack of energy, physical exhaustion and lack of motivation. Further, supervisor support was found to moderate the effect from work-family conflict on the physical subdimensions of fatigue. Conclusion: Although restricted by its cross-sectional design and a limited sample, this study provides support for the independent relevance of work family conflict and support from nearest superior for employee fatigue in ferry shipping. Further, there was evidence for a moderating role of such support on the negative impact of work-family conflict on the physical aspects of fatigue. Shipping companies may consider commencing initiatives which reduce conflicts between family life and work obligations, and that leader support may be a relevant component in such initiatives.

Fatigue strength of laser-welded thin-plate ship structures based on nominal and structural hot-spot stress approach

To improve the energy efficiency, the demand for new light-weight solutions has been increased significantly in the last decades. The weight reduction of the current ship structures is possible using thinner plates, that is, plate thickness between 3 and 4 mm. However, at present this is, in normal cases, not possible due to the 5 mm minimum plate thickness requirement given by classification societies. The present paper investigates the fatigue strength of thin-plated ship structures. In the European research project BESST – ‘Breakthrough in European Ship and Shipbuilding Technologies’ – the extensive fatigue test programme was carried out for butt- and fillet-welded specimens, which were manufactured by the arc, laser and laser-hybrid welding methods. The test programme also covered the different production quality and thus a large variation of misalignments was included. Fatigue test results were analysed using the nominal as well as the structural stress approach, where the actual geometry of the specimens was taken into account. The results show that the present design S–N curve with slope value of 3 is applicable to thin plates, but it is slightly non-conservative. The fatigue test results for thin plates show better agreement with the slope value of 5. For thin plates and slender ship structures, the secondary bending stress due to angular misalignment plays an important part and changes in a non-linear way with the applied tension load. Therefore, it is important to consider the plate straightening effect in structural stress analysis.

Fault tolerant position-mooring control for offshore vessels

Blanke, Mogens; Nguyen, Dong Trong

Fault-tolerance is crucial to maintain safety in offshore operations. The objective of this paper is to show how systematic analysis and design of fault-tolerance is conducted for a complex automation system, exemplified by thruster assisted Position-mooring. Using redundancy as required by classification societies' class notations for offshore position controlled vessels, the paper shows how violations of normal behaviour of main components can be detected and isolated. Using a functional service philosophy, diagnosis procedures are auto-generated based on provable correct graph analysis methods. Functional faults that are only detectable, are rendered isolable through an active isolation approach. Once functional faults are isolated, they are handled by fault accommodation techniques to meet overall control objectives specified by class requirements. The paper illustrates the generic methodology by a system to handle faults in mooring lines, sensors or thrusters. Simulations and model basin experiments are carried out to validate the concept for scenarios with single or multiple faults. The results demonstrate that enhanced availability and safety are obtainable with this design approach. While methods are introduced at a tutorial level, the paper is original by providing a total Position-mooring system design that ensures resilience to any single fault and to selected multiple faults.

Fishers sharing real-time information about “bad” fishing locations: A tool for quota optimization under a regime of landing obligations

Soren Qvist Eliasen & Nikolaj Bichel

There is an increasing pressure on the fisheries to avoid bycatch and discards. In the EU this is seen in landing obligations in the new Common Fisheries Policy. The European fisheries are thus under pressure to be highly selective both in adjusting catches to the individual or collective quota combinations and to be size selective in order to optimize the economic outcome of the available quota. This paper proposes a strategy of time-place selectivity by sharing real-time data and information between vessels about areas with high abundance of unwanted species and sizes (hotspots). The paper examines use of time-place regulation, risks/benefits of sharing knowledge and experiences from a previous real-time information sharing system as a basis for developing the four models for fisher's sharing of information. The models differ with respect to data and information collection methods, who owns and accesses the data and hotspot warnings. The models are tested through a discussion of the possible application of the models in the context of the nephrops trawl fishery in Kattegat and Skagerrak. Based on this the models are proposed as possible tools for the fishing industry and managers when adjusted to specific local conditions, and a recommendation for policy support of development of information sharing systems is outlined.
