This paper analyzes the nonlinear forces on a moored point-absorbing wave energy converter (WEC) in resonance at prototype scale (1:1) and at model scale (1:16). Three simulation types were used: Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS), Euler and the linear radiation-diffraction method (linear). Results show that when the wave steepness is doubled, the response reduction is: (i) 3% due to the nonlinear mooring response and the Froude-Krylov force; (ii) 1-4% due to viscous forces; and (iii) 18-19% due to induced drag and non-linear added mass and radiation forces. The effect of the induced drag is shown to be largely scale-independent. It is caused by local pressure variations due to vortex generation below the body, which reduces the total pressure force on the hole. Euler simulations are shown to be scale-independent and the scale effects of the WEC are limited by the purely viscous contribution (1-4%) for the two waves studied. We recommend that experimental model scale test campaigns of WECs should be accompanied by RANS simulations, and the analysis complemented by scale-independent Euler simulations to quantify the scale-dependent part of the nonlinear effects.
Floating breakwaters (FBs) are frequently used to protect marinas, fisheries, or other bodies of water subject to wave attacks of moderate intensity. New forms of FBs are frequently introduced and investigated in the literature as a consequence of technological advancements. In particular, a new possibility is offered by High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) by extruding pipes of large diameters (e.g., 2.5 m in diameter) and with virtually no limit in length (hundreds of meters). By connecting two or three such pipes in a vertical layout, a novel low-cost floating breakwater with deep draft is devised. This note investigates numerically and experimentally the efficiency of this type of multi-cylindrical FBs in evaluating different geometries and aims at finding design guidelines. Due to the extraordinary length of the breakwater, the investigation is carried out in two dimensions. The 2D numerical model is based on the solution of the rigid body motion in the frequency domain, where the hydrodynamic forces are evaluated (thanks to a linear potential flow model), and the mooring forces do not include dynamic effects nor drag on the lines. The numerical predictions are compared to the results of a 1:10 scale experimental investigation. An atypical shape of the wave transmission (đđĄ) curve is found, with a very low minimum in correspondence with the heave resonance frequency. The results essentially point out the influence of the position of the gravity center, the stiffness, and the mutual distance among cylinders on đđĄ.
The purpose of this project is therefore to develop a software tool that can implement an automated intelligent registration (artificial intelligence) of the catch of cod on board the vessel. The project can both support the ongoing camera projects, but also functions as a forward-looking method where the concept of this approach is that the camera focuses on the catch and can be implemented without human supervision. This has a number of potential advantages, including that human supervision is avoided, the number of cameras can probably be reduced to just one (although possibly a stereo camera), labor resources are saved by automated monitoring, it will be possible to reduce the amount of data, fishermen can target selective fishing based on the information obtained, increased precision in relation to possible legal
use of the observations and overall it will reduce costs. The project supports the monitoring that has been initiated in the Kattegat, but should also be seen as a future development, including internationally, where the focus is on building monitoring/surveillance around the use of images as documentation of the catch. An extremely important element of the project is to create a high-quality dataset that can be used internationally to improve algorithms and intensify research.
As the world collectively looks to technology to salvage what is left of our world to sustain a habitat that can accommodate our way of life, users are increasingly exposed to technological solutions, rarely developed with an offset in their practice. This also holds for the maritime sector in Denmark, where the way of developing technology is limited to the applicability of technological artifacts and can reduce the potential efficiency gains that technologies can introduce. This paper applies qualitative research to show that there is a disconnect between, on the one hand, funders, technology developers, and decision-makers and, on the other hand, technology users and practitioners in the Danish maritime sector. It argued that if technology is to replace or assist any human practice and solve for example the climate crises, then knowledge of usersâ practices must be key to developing the technological solutions.
Existing energy management strategies (EMSs) for hybrid power systems (HPSs) in hydrogen fuel cell vessels (FCVs) are not applicable to scenarios with multiple hydrogen fuel cells (FCs) and lithium batteries (LBs) in parallel, and are difficult to achieve real-time control and optimization for multiple objectives. In this paper, a bi-layer real-time energy management strategy (BLRT-EMS) is proposed. Compared with existing EMSs, the proposed BLRT-EMS implements different control/optimization objectives distributed in the execution layer EMS (EL-EMS) and the decision layer EMS (DL-EMS), which can significantly reduce bus voltage fluctuations, decrease hydrogen consumptions, improve the system efficiency, and have potential for engineering applications. In the first EL-EMS, a decentralized optimal power allocation strategy is proposed, which allows each FC system to allocate the output power ratio according to their generation costs, ensuring consistent performance of multiple FC systems (MFCS) under long-term operating conditions, and thus delaying the degradation rate of FCs. In the second EL-EMS, a distributed cooperative control strategy is proposed to achieve dynamic SoC equalization, proportional output power allocation, and accurate bus voltage restoration among multiple battery storage systems (MBSS) to extend the service life of batteries. In the DL-EMS, an energy coordination optimization strategy between MFCS and MBSS is proposed to achieve hydrogen consumption reduction and system efficiency improvement, thus enhancing the endurance performance of FCV. Finally, test results based on the StarSim experimental platform show that the proposed BLRT-EMS has faster SoC convergence speed, smaller bus voltage deviation, lower hydrogen consumption, higher system efficiency, and lower operation stress than the state-of-the-art methods.
The project "IEA OES Task 10 Phase III - WEC Modelling" is a publicly-funded research project under the Danish Energy Agency EUDP grant with Journal no. 134232-510153. As part of the initial period of the project, a selection of three test cases has been defined under WP2. The present report forms the deliverable for Milestone "M1: Case studies defined".
The present study investigates three-dimensional gap resonance between two fixed side-by-side barges under combined wave and uniform current excitation using a fully nonlinear numerical wave tank based on the NavierâStokes equations. It examines how currents aligned with regular waves affect the gap response under head and beam seas. In beam seas, the free surface in the gap primarily exhibits a modal-type response in the form of a standing wave. The maximum gap response, consistently occurring at the midpoint of the gap, increases gradually with the current speed. Conversely, in head seas, the maximum response decreases slightly with increasing current speed, and the occurring location shifts downstream. Moreover, resonant free-surface responses along the gap in head seas manifest as propagating waves rather than modal-type standing waves, consisting of a wider spectrum of wave components around the resonant ones and traveling faster than the incident waves regardless of current speed. The wavelengths of those resonant waves tend to increase with increasing current speed. Additionally, the presence of current significantly enlarges the transverse first-harmonic and mean-drift wave forces on the barges under beam-sea conditions. The study highlights the necessity of considering current effects on three-dimensional gap resonances in marine operations at coastal and offshore locations.
Offshore de-oiling installations are facing an increasing challenge with regards to removing oil residuals from produced water prior to discharge into the ocean. The de-oiling of produced water is initially achieved in the primary separation processes using gravity-based multi-phase separators, which can effectively handle large amounts of oil-well fluids but may struggle with the efficient separation of small dispersed oil particles. Thereby hydrocyclone systems are commonly employed in the downstream Produced Water Treatment (PWT) process for further reducing the oil concentration in the produced water before it can be discharged into the ocean. The popularity of hydrocyclone technology in the offshore oil and gas industry is mainly due to its rugged design and low maintenance requirements. However, to operate and control this type of system in an efficient way is far less simple, and alternatively this task imposes a number of key control challenges. Specifically, there is much research to be performed in the direction of dynamic modeling and control of de-oiling hydrocyclone systems. The current solutions rely heavily on empirical trial-and-error approaches. This paper gives a brief review of current hydrocyclone control solutions and the remaining challenges and includes some of our recent work in this topic and ends with a motivation for future work.
The upstream offshore multi-phase well-pipeline-riser installations are facing huge challenges related to slugging flow: An unstable flow regime where the flow rates, pressures and temperatures oscillate in the multi-phase pipelines. One typical severe slug is induced by vertical wells or risers causing the pressure to build up and hence originates the oscillating pressure and flow. There exist many negative consequences related to the severe slugging flow and thus lots of investments and effort have been put into reducing or completely eliminating the severe slug. This paper reviews in detail the state-of-the-art related to analysis, detection, dynamical modeling and elimination of the slug within the offshore oil & gas Exploration and Production (E&P) processes. Modeling of slugging flow has been used to investigate the slug characteristics and for design of anti-slug control as well, however most models require specific facility and operating data which, unfortunately, often is not available from most offshore installations. Anti-slug control has been investigated for several decades in the oil & gas industry, but many of these existing methods suffer the consequent risk of simultaneously reducing the oil & gas production. This paper concludes that slug is a well defined phenomenon, but even though it has been investigated for several decades the current anti-slug control methods still have problems related to robustness. It is predicted that slug-induced challenges will be even more severe as a consequence of the longer vertical risers caused by deep-water E&P in the future.
The goal of this paper is to introduce and design a cost-effective Oil-in-Water (OiW) measuring instrument, which will be investigated for its value in increasing the efficiency of a deoiling hydrocyclone. The technique investigated is based on Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), whose basic principle is to measure the resistivity of substances from multiple electrodes and from these measurements create a 2-D image of the oil and gas component in the water. This technique requires the measured components to have different electrical resistances, such as seawater which has a lower electrical resistance than hydrocarbon oil and gas. This work involves construction of a pilot plant, for testing the feasibility of ERT for OiW measurements, and further exploring if this measured signal can be applied as a reliable feedback signal in optimization of the hydrocyclone's efficiency. Different algorithms for creating 2-D images and the feasibility of estimating OiW concentrations are studied and evaluated. From both steady state and continuous laminate flow perspectives, with respect to the objective which is to use this measurement for feedback control purposes.
