ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF USING CAMERAS ON SMALL, LOW-COST ROVS FOR SEABED MONITORING

Monitoring methods, such as seabed bottom-towed cameras, sediment grabs, and benthic sledges, have limitations in spatial coverage, cause seabed disturbance, are restricted to soft-bottom substrates, and offer low flexibility for marine seabed monitoring. In this study, we investigate the potential of a non-invasive and simple underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to enhance marine seabed monitoring. A tethered ROV equipped with a GoPro camera was deployed in three areas of Skagerrak at depths from 15-34 m to assess accuracy in species identification and substrate classification identified from still frames. The quality of still frames varied between areas due to turbidity, motion blur, and marine snow, which reduced the number of high-quality frames by approximately 20%. Classification of substrates and taxa identification were possible in the remaining still frames. Two different substrates were detected: sand and stone reef. Stone reefs had a lower occurrence compared to sand. A total of 10 taxa were detected in the two substrate types. The highest abundance was observed in the stone reef substrate compared to the sand substrate. Identification at the species level was limited due to the quality of the still frames, which affected the detectability of morphological traits. This study demonstrates that a widely accessible ROV can be used for marine monitoring. The ROV can be used in different substrates, and still frames provide valuable information on species composition, which can enhance the replicability of monitoring programs.

Operational cycles for maritime transportation: Consolidated methodology and assessments

Operational cycles for maritime transportation is a new concept to improve the assessment of ships’ energy efficiency and offer benchmarking options among similar ship types and sizes. This work extends previous research to consolidate the methodology, bring more comprehensiveness, and provide a more holistic assessment of these operational cycles. The cycles are designed from noon reports from a fleet of around 300 container ships divided into eight size groups. The comparison between cycles derived from speed and draft with those based on main engine power identifies that the cycles based on speed and draft are more accurate and allow for estimating the Energy Efficiency Operational Index but require more data. The main-engine-power cycles are more effective in benchmarking through the Annual Efficiency Ratio. These cycles reduce the inherent variability of the carbon intensity indicator and present good opportunities as a benchmarking tool for strengthening the regulatory framework of international shipping.

Prediction of the extreme slow-drift response of moored floating structures using design waves

Design waves have been used in the past for the probabilistic assessment of wave-induced loads and responses of offshore structures. Various response-conditioning techniques have been employed to determine suitable wave episodes, typically based on linear response transfer functions. Nevertheless, extreme events are not always driven by linear phenomena but can be triggered by near-resonant effects, as in the case of the slow-drift motions of moored floating bodies. Limited research has been devoted to addressing this class of responses using response-conditioned waves (RCW). This paper presents a new approach for deriving RCWs that accounts for combined wave- and low-frequency responses. Both the response amplitude operator (RAO) and the quadratic transfer function (QTF) are employed in an iterative response-conditioning procedure. That permits the identification of appropriate short-duration wave episodes that excite resonant slow-drift motions. These wave episodes are then used in a two-step multi-fidelity design wave methodology for the probabilistic evaluation of the fully nonlinear extreme responses. The proposed approach is validated experimentally for predicting the surge excursions of a moored container ship, and good agreement is found against Monte Carlo results in irregular waves.

An hp-adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for shallow water flows

An adaptive spectral/hp discontinuous Galerkin method for the two-dimensional shallow water equations is presented. The model uses an orthogonal modal basis of arbitrary polynomial order p defined on unstructured, possibly non-conforming, triangular elements for the spatial discretization. Based on a simple error indicator constructed by the solutions of approximation order p and p-1, we allow both for the mesh size, h, and polynomial approximation order to dynamically change during the simulation. For the h-type refinement, the parent element is subdivided into four similar sibling elements. The time-stepping is performed using a third-order Runge-Kutta scheme. The performance of the hp-adaptivity is illustrated for several test cases. It is found that for the case of smooth flows, p-adaptivity is more efficient than h-adaptivity with respect to degrees of freedom and computational time.

Nonlinear wave-body interaction using a mixed-Eulerian-Lagrangian spectral element model

We present recent progress on the development of a new fully nonlinear potential flow (FNPF) model for estimation of nonlinear wave-body interactions based on a stabilized unstructured spectral element method (SEM). We introduce new proof-of-concepts for forced nonlinear wave-body interaction in two spatial dimensions to establish the methodology in the SEM setting utilizing dynamically adapted unstructured meshes. The numerical method behind the proposed methodology is described in some detail and numerical experiments on the forced motion of (i) surface piercing and (ii) submerged bodies are presented.

Utility of collaborative GIS for maritime spatial planning: Design and evaluation of Baltic Explorer

Maritime spatial planning (MSP) needs tools to facilitate discussions and manage spatial data in collaborative workshops that involve actors with different types of backgrounds and expertise. Never the less, spatial tools in real-world MSP are only sparsely used. In the article it is argued that more knowledge about the use of GIS can support MSP is needed. It studies the use of GIS as a tool for collaborative MSP in five steps around development and testing of the prototype collaborative GIS, Baltic Explorer. The evaluation of the use found that the present functionalities of the system could support and facilitate the collaborative discussions in the MSP work. Still more research in the use of spatial data in the MSP process is needed.

Marine-Fouling Composition Estimation using Cost-effective Sensing

Determination of coverage and thickness of marine growth is a useful tool for determining structural loads and drags on marine structures and ships. In this work, we present an algorithmic program based on sonar and optical camera measurements, that estimates both the coverage and thickness of marine-fouling on off-shore structures. The marine-fouling composition is estimated using a Deep-Neural Network, trained using supervised methods, which can distinguish between hard/soft fouling species and the background water and structural components. The marine-fouling thickness is estimated using an HF Forward Looking Sonar, which is applied as a sensitive ultrasonic thickness gauge, when combined with a thickness measurement algorithm. Combined the measurements provide a localized estimate of the marine-fouling coverage and loadings across the structural surfaces, which can be used for automatic inspection evaluation and mission planning.

High-fidelity modelling of moored marine structures: multi-component simulations and fluid-mooring coupling

High-fidelity viscous computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models coupled to dynamic mooring models is becoming an established tool for marine wave-body-mooring (WBM) interaction problems. The CFD and the mooring solvers most often communicate by exchanging positions and mooring forces at the mooring fairleads. Mooring components such as submerged buoys and clump weights are usually not resolved in the CFD model, but are treated as Morison-type bodies. This paper presents two recent developments in high-fidelity WBM modelling: (i) a one-way fluid-mooring coupling that samples the CFD fluid kinematics to approximate drag and inertia forces in the mooring model; and (ii) support for inter-moored multibody simulations that can resolve fluid dynamics on a mooring component level. The developments are made in the high-order discontinuous Galerkin mooring solver MoodyCore, and in the two-phase incompressible Navier–Stokes finite volume solver OpenFOAM. The fluid-mooring coupling is verified with experimental tests of a mooring cable in steady current. It is also used to model the response of the slack-moored DeepCwind FOWT exposed to regular waves. Minor effects of fluid-mooring coupling were noted, as expected since this a mild wave case. The inter-mooring development is demonstrated on a point-absorbing WEC moored with a hybrid mooring system, fully resolved in CFD-MoodyCore. The WEC (including a quasi-linear PTO) and the submerged buoys are resolved in CFD, while the mooring dynamics include inter-mooring effects and the one-way sampling of the flow. The combined wave-body-mooring model is judged to be very complete and to cover most of the relevant effects for marine WBM problems.

A mesh adaptive compressible Euler model for the simulation of cavitating flow

We present computations of cavitating flow over a NACA0015 hydrofoil. The simulations are performed by a finite volume compressible Euler model with dynamic mesh adaptation. The adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) is driven by a generic, simple and efficient error estimator based on the jump in value between cell faces for a given variable. It is shown that AMR based on vapour fraction provide unsatisfactory results both for (quasi-) steady and unsteady cavitation, as the major flow features are not captured. Instead, adaptivity driven by the Q-value proved successful even for resolving the cavity interface.

Solution verification of WECs: comparison of methods to estimate numerical uncertainties in the OES wave energy modeling task

High-fidelity models become more and more used in the wave energy sector. They offer a fully nonlinear simulation tool that in theory should encompass all linear and nonlinear forces acting on a wave energy converter (WEC). Studies using high-fidelity models are usually focusing on validation of the model. However, a validated model does not necessarily provide reliable solutions. Solution verification is the methodology to estimate the numerical uncertainties related to a simulation. In this work we test four different approaches: the classical grid convergence index (GCI); a least-squares version (LS-GCI); a simplified version of the least-square method (SLS-GCI); and the ITTC recommended practice. The LS-GCI requires four or more solutions whereas the other three methods only need three solutions. We apply these methods to four different high-fidelity models for the case of a heaving sphere. We evaluate the numerical uncertainties for two parameters in the time domain and two parameters in the frequency domain. It was found that the GCI and ITTC were hard to use on the frequency domain parameters as they require monotonic convergence which sometimes does not happen due to the differences in the solutions being very small. The SLS-GCI performed almost as well as the SL-GCI method and will be further investigated.
