Challenges with harmonic compensation at a remote bus in offshore wind power plant

This paper investigates the challenges associated with remote harmonic compensation in offshore wind power plants through long cables and transformers. The interaction between the grid network and the wind power plant network can lead to the amplification of certain harmonics and potentially resonant conditions. Hence, the plant developer is required to maintain the harmonic distortion at the point of common coupling within the planning level limits using harmonic compensation, which is usually done by static filters. In this paper an active damping compensation strategy with a STATCOM using emulation of using emulation of resistance at the harmonic frequencies of concern is analyzed. Finally the results are demonstrated using time domain simulations in PSCAD.

Design of a novel tower damping system for semi-submersible floating offshore wind turbines considering fatigue and ultimate limit states

This study proposes a novel tower damping system to enhance the structural performance of the NREL 5 MW semi-submersible wind turbine under operational and extreme load conditions. Environmental load data from the Norwegian MET center was analyzed to characterize the loading conditions for floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT). The probability density spectrum of sea state data was employed to identify operational load conditions. At the same time, the Inverse First-Order Reliability Method (IFORM) was utilized to derive the 50-year extreme sea state. Perform a fully coupled Aero-Hydro-Servo-Elastic simulation of the FOWT dynamic model with a damping system using OrcaFlex software. The results reveal that: Under operational sea states, the turbine tower-top displacement was reduced by 60–70%, and acceleration by 30–40%, enhancing tower-top stability. Under extreme loads, tower-top acceleration was reduced by 5–7%, and displacement by 6–8%. Cumulative damage assessments indicate a reduction in fatigue damage of up to 72%, with the effective fatigue life of the tower base extended by 136%. The proposed damping system significantly reduces vibration under fatigue and extreme load conditions.

Directional Spectrum Estimation for Sea States Generated by the Single Summation Method

The influence of directional spreading of waves is significant for wave-induced loads, wave breaking and nonlinearity of the waves. For physical model testing performed at test facilities such as the Ocean and Coastal Engineering Laboratory at Aalborg University, it is crucial to validate if the test conditions match the target sea states by measurement and analysis of the generated directional wave field. Most of the existing methods assume a double summation sea state to be present which is valid in the prototype. However, waves in the laboratory are usually generated by single summation. The current paper presents a method to analyze short-crested waves generated by the single summation method. Compared to similar methods oblique reflections are considered instead of only in-line reflections. The results show that the method successfully decomposes the incident and reflected wave fields in the time domain. Thus, for example the incident wave height distribution may be obtained. The sensitivity of the new method to additional reflective directions, noise, calibration errors and positional errors of the wave gauges was found small.

Energy Requirement Analysis on Carbon Capture Plants Satisfying Impurity Specifications

Simulation-based analysis estimating both the energy requirement of the entire carbon capture process and the purity of the recovered CO 2 is scarce. The purity of the captured CO 2 is crucial as it must meet a specification before transportation, preventing phase change and damage to the transportation system. This study conducted 31,104 simulations of a monoethanolamine carbon capture plant treating measured flue gas from an existing cement production plant. After capture, the CO 2 is treated through a deoxygenation unit followed by a compression train to fulfill specific quality specifications. Based on the sensitivity analysis, the energy consumption of the post-treatment process decreased with increased purity downstream. Despite this, the total energy consumption was not affected. Moreover, after the two-step purification the CO 2 stream was able to successfully fulfill the specification for NO x, O 2, NH 3, Ar, CO, SO 2. However, failing to meet the H 2O concentration requirements of both considered specifications and the N 2 concentration specified for ship transport. Thus, increasing the post-treatment energy cost or standard adjustments is required for future applications.

Estimation of incident and reflected components in nonlinear regular waves over sloping foreshores

The present paper deals with separation of long-crested regular waves into incident and reflected components. Such methods have been available for several decades for linear waves, but have recently been extended to cover nonlinear waves over horizontal foreshores. The overall goal of the present paper is to extend the separation method for nonlinear regular waves to also cover sloping foreshores. This requires the combination of the existing method with a nonlinear shoaling model. A nonlinear shoaling model was very recently found valid for the shoaling of the primary and bound components in regular waves when the slope angle is positive and mild. In the present paper this shoaling model is utilized and assumed valid also for the de-shoaling of the reflected waves, ie on a negative mild slope angle. However, if the reflected waves are nonlinear the de-shoaling process is much more complicated and will for example cause the release of free waves. Interactions among those free reflected wave components may cause nonlinear interactions not included in the mathematical model. For that reason, the applicability range is limited to mildly nonlinear reflected waves. Using numerical model data with various foreshore slopes, wave nonlinearities and reflection coefficients the reliability of the developed model is examined in detail.

Experimental Investigation of Mooring Configurations for Wave Energy Converters

Mooring systems are required to keep floating wave energy converters (WECs) on station. The mooring concept might impact the performance of the WEC, its cost and its integrity. With the aim of clarifying the pros and cons of different mooring designs, we present the results from physical model experiments of three different mooring concepts in regular and irregular waves, including operational and survival conditions. The parameters investigated are the tension in the cables, the motions of the device in the different degrees of freedom and the seabed footprint in each case. We can see that the mooring system affects the performance of the wave energy converter, but the magnitude of the impact depends on the parameter analysed, on the mode of motion studied and on the conditions of the sea. Moreover, different configurations have similar performances in some situations and the choice of one over another might come down to factors such as the type of soil of the seabed, the spacing desired between devices, or environmental impacts. The results of our experiments provide information for a better selection of the mooring system for a wave energy converter when several constraints are taken into account (power production, maximum displacements, extreme tensions, etc).

Extreme Wave Run-Up Loads on Monopile Appurtenances: A Practical Guide

Monopiles are often the preferred foundation concept for an offshore wind turbine. The interaction between extreme waves and the large diameter monopile will in some cases result in a vertical jet of water uprush on the monopile (i.e., wave run-up) which subsequently may lead to large slamming loads on monopile appurtenances like the external working platform.

Extreme wave run-up interaction with an external working platform is often an area of concern during the design phase of an offshore wind project as an overly conservative assessment of the run-up loads may lead to unneeded costs in material and an increased project carbon footprint. An insufficient assessment of the run-up loads may lead to structural failure of the appurtenances and subsequent costly maintenance and repair works, further exacerbated by possibly difficult access to the damaged platform.

The practical process in the assessment of wave run-up on monopiles and associated loads on appurtenances can be a challenge to the designer due to lack of guidance on this topic in governing standards. The designer may then have to rely on several sources of available literature and must assess and include the effect of associated uncertainties like: Adjustment to site specific environmental conditions, unclear or unconcise terminology in the literature, lack of model test results representing the actual geometry and limited knowledge of spatial and temporal run-up load distribution on the appurtenances.

The aim of the present paper is to describe a complete methodology for assessment of wave run-up on monopiles and associated loads on appurtenances. The methodology, which will serve as a practical guide, is based on a collection of existing methods with new analysis to consider the pressure distribution on modern asymmetric grated platforms. This was based on experiences gained and challenges encountered during a detail design project of a monopile foundation for an offshore wind turbine in extreme environmental conditions. The sensitivity of the run-up assessment related to the design input (water depth, wave height and period, associated water level and current conditions) is discussed by considering a matrix with various environmental input combinations representing extreme environmental conditions.

Generation of Highly Nonlinear Waves in a Short Wave Flume

The typical approach for generating nonlinear waves in physical models involves employing first- or second-order wave theory, requiring a large water depth at the wavemaker. When the prototype bathymetry shows a gentle slope, a large facility is required. However, practical constraints often make this unfeasible, leading to the use of steep transition slopes to obtain sufficient water depth at the generator. Incorporating a transition slope may generate unwanted free waves beyond the transition point, significantly impacting the wave parameters. The presence of these free waves causes the response of the tested structure to deviate from that found in the prototype. This paper offers guidelines for using transition slopes effectively while avoiding the generation of unwanted free waves after the transition point.

Due to the presence of long high voltage cable networks, and power transformers for the grid connection, the offshore wind power plants (OWPPs) are susceptible to harmonic distortion and resonances. The grid connection of OWPP should not cause the harmonic distortion beyond the permissible limits at the point of common coupling (PCC). The resonance conditions should be avoided in all cases.

This paper describes the harmonic analysis techniques applied on an OWPP network model. A method is proposed to estimate the harmonic current compensation from a shunt-connected active power filter to mitigate the harmonic voltage distortion at the PCC. Finally, the harmonic distortions in the compensated and the uncompensated systems are compared to demonstrate the effectiveness of the compensation.

Harmonic Mitigation Methods in Large Offshore Wind Power Plants

Various sources of harmonic problems in large wind power plants (WPPs) and optimized harmonic mitigation methods are presented in this paper. The harmonic problems such as sources of harmonic emission and amplification as well as harmonic stability are identified. Also modern preventive and remedial harmonic mitigation methods in terms of passive and active filtering are described. It is shown that WPP components such as long HVAC cables and park transformers can introduce significant low-frequency resonances which can affect wind turbine control system operation and overall WPP stability as well as amplification of harmonic distortion. It is underlined that there is a potential in terms of active filtering in modern grid-side converters in e.g. wind turbines, STATCOMs or HVDC stations utilized in modern large WPPs. It is also emphasized that the grid-side converter controller should be characterized by sufficient harmonic/noise rejection and adjusted depending on WPPs to which it is connected.
