A practical estimation methodology of the mean added resistance in irregular waves is shown, and the present paper provides statistical analyses of estimates for ships in actual conditions. The study merges telemetry data of more than 200 in-service container vessels with ocean re-analysis data from ERA5. Theoretical estimates relying on spectral calculations of added resistance are made for both long- and short-crested waves and are based on a combination of a parametric expression for the wave spectrum and a semi-empirical formula for the added resistance transfer function. The theoretical estimates are compared to predictions from an indirect calculation of added resistance relying on shaft power measurements and empirical estimates of the remaining resistance components. Overall, the comparison reveals a bias in bow oblique waves and higher sea states of the spectral estimates as well as the large variance of the empirically derived predictions — particularly in beam-to-following waves. One of the study’s main findings, confirming previous studies but based on a much larger dataset than in earlier similar studies, is that added resistance assessment based on in-service data is complex due to significant associated uncertainties.
Maritime piracy incidents present significant threats to maritime security, resulting in material damages and jeopardizing the safety of crews. Despite the scope of the issue, existing research has not adequately explored the diverse risks and theoretical implications involved. To fill that gap, this paper aims to develop a comprehensive framework for analyzing global piracy incidents. The framework assesses risk levels and identifies patterns from spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal dimensions, which facilitates the development of informed anti-piracy policy decisions. Firstly, the paper introduces a novel risk assessment mechanism for piracy incidents and constructs a dataset encompassing 3,716 recorded incidents from 2010 to 2021. Secondly, this study has developed a visualization and analysis framework capable of examining piracy incidents through the identification of clusters, outliers, and hot spots. Thirdly, a number of experiments are conducted on the constructed dataset to scrutinize current spatial-temporal patterns of piracy accidents. In experiments, we analyze the current trends in piracy incidents on temporal, spatial, and spatio-temporal dimensions to provide a detailed examination of piracy incidents. The paper contributes new understandings of piracy distribution and patterns, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of anti-piracy measures.
This paper studies the Quay Crane Scheduling Problem (QCSP). The QCSP determines how a number of quay cranes should be scheduled in order to service a vessel with minimum makespan. Previous work considers the QCSP to be a combinatorially hard problem. For that reason, the focus has been on developing efficient heuristics. Our study shows, however, that the QCSP is tractable in the realistic setting, where quay cranes can share the workload of bays. We introduce a novel linear time algorithm that solves the QCSP and prove its correctness.
Product-based companies worldwide attempt to integrate services into their offerings, embarking on “servitization” as a key strategy. These days, the acceleration of technological innovation (i.e., Industry 4.0) has triggered an emerging IT-driven business paradigm called digital servitization or smart product-service system (PSS) that embeds Industry 4.0 technologies. As a result of these developments, related literature has expanded across different disciplines in recent years. However, understanding and describing literature is not easy considering its volume and variety. Establishing common ground for central concepts is essential for science. Thus, to clarify important topics and research issues on servitization and PSSs in Industry 4.0, we carry out a comprehensive literature review by performing text mining of 419 journal articles. A machine learning approach is applied to learn and identify the specific topics, and the suggested key references are manually reviewed to develop a state-of-the-art overview. A total of 10 key research topics are identified, and the enabler–engineering–goal framework is developed. This study contributes to clarifying a systematized view of dispersed studies of servitization and PSSs in Industry 4.0 across multiple disciplines and encourages further academic discussions and industrial transformation.
Considering 91 countries with seaports, this study conducted an empirical inquiry into the broader economic contribution of seaborne trade, from a port infrastructure quality and logistics performance perspective. Investment in quality improvement of port infrastructure and its contribution to economy are often questioned by politicians, investors and general public. A structural equation model (SEM) is used to provide empirical evidence of significant economic impacts of port infrastructure quality and logistics performance. Furthermore, analysis of a multi-group SEM is performed by dividing countries into developed and developing economy groups. The results reveal that it is vital for developing countries to continuously improve the quality of port infrastructure as it contributes to better logistics performance, leading to higher seaborne trade, yielding higher economic growth. However, this association weakens as the developing countries become richer.
This study introduces a state-of-the-art volatility forecasting method for container shipping freight rates. Over the last decade, the container shipping industry has become very unpredictable. The demolition of the shipping conferences system in 2008 for all trades calling a port in the European Union (EU) and the global financial crisis in 2009 have affected the container shipping freight market adversely towards a depressive and non-stable market environment with heavily fluctuating freight rate movements. At the same time, the approaches of forecasting container freight rates using econometric and time series modelling have been rather limited. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss contemporary container freight rate dynamics in an attempt to forecast for the Far East to Northern Europe trade lane. Methodology-wise, we employ autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) as well as the combination of ARIMA and autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (ARCH) model, which we call ARIMARCH. We observe that ARIMARCH model provides comparatively better results than the existing freight rate forecasting models while performing short-term forecasts on a weekly as well as monthly level. We also observe remarkable influence of recurrent general rate increases on the container freight rate volatility.
How value is created through service has recently undergone massive changes. Centralized service provision with clear distinctions between service offerers and beneficiaries is increasingly being substituted by value creation within decentralized networks of distributed actors integrating digital resources. One of the drivers of this transformation is blockchain technology. Applying the lens of service-dominant logic and discussing examples of blockchain-based decentralized finance, we shed light on how properties of decentralized technology stimulate value creation in service ecosystems. With this conceptual research, we postulate five propositions of decentralized value creation along the axiomatic foundations of the service-dominant logic. We provide first definitions for decentralized service as well as decentralized service ecosystems. Thereby, we contribute with an extension of the service-dominant logic to the context of decentralized ecosystems. To our knowledge, this research is among the first to add to the growing literature on blockchain value creation from a service science perspective.
This paper evaluates the influence of forecast horizon and observation fit on the robustness and performance of a specific freight rate forecast model used in the liner shipping industry. In the first stage of the research, a forecast model used to predict container freight rate development is presented by exploring the relationship between individual company’s rates and aggregated market rates, and thus assists in dealing with uncertainty and market volatility for a given business situation. In the second stage, a design of experiment approach is applied to highlight the influence of the forecast horizon and observation fit and their interactions on the forecast model’s performance. The results underline the complicated nature of creating a suitable forecast model by balancing business needs, a desire to fit a good model and achieve high accuracy. There is strong empirical evidence from this study; that a robust model is preferable, that overfitting is a true danger, and that a balance must be achieved between forecast horizon and the number of observations used to fit the model. In addition, methodological guidance has also been provided on how to test, design, and choose the superior model for business needs.
Determining the key characteristics of a ship during the concept and preliminary design phases is a critical and intricate process. In this study, we propose an alternative to traditional empirical methods by introducing a model to estimate the main particulars of diesel-powered Z-Drive harbor tugboats. This prediction is performed to determine the main particulars of tugboats: length, beam, draft, and power concerning the required service speed and bollard pull values, employing Bayesian network and non-linear regression methods. We utilized a dataset comprising 476 samples from 68 distinct diesel-powered Z-Drive harbor tugboat series to construct this model. The case study results demonstrate that the established model accurately predicts the main parameters of a tugboat with the obtained average of mean absolute percentage error values; 6.574% for the Bayesian network and 5.795%, 9.955% for non-linear regression methods. This model, therefore, proves to be a practical and valuable tool for ship designers in determining the main particulars of ships during the concept design stage by reducing revision return possibilities in further stages of ship design.
The paper proposes a methodology for freight corridor performance monitoring that is suitable for sustainability assessments. The methodology, initiated by the EU-funded project SuperGreen, involves the periodic monitoring of a standard set of transport chains along the corridor in relation to a number of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). It consists of decomposing the corridor into transport chains, selecting a sample of typical chains, assessing these chains through a set of KPIs, and then aggregating the chain-level KPIs to corridor-level ones using proper weights. A critical feature of this methodology concerns the selection of the sample chains and the calculation of the corresponding weights. After several rounds of development, the proposed methodology suggests a combined approach involving the use of a transport model for sample construction and weight calculation followed by stakeholder refinement and verification. The sample construction part of the methodology was tested on GreCOR, a green corridor project in the North Sea Region, using the Danish National Traffic Model as the principal source of information for both sample construction and KPI estimation. The results show that, to the extent covered by the GreCOR application, the proposed methodology can effectively assess the performance of a freight transport corridor. Combining the model-based approach for the sample construction with the study-based approach for the estimation of chain-level indicators exploits the strengths of each method and avoids their weaknesses. Possible improvements are also suggested by the paper.
