VIDEREGÅENDE MARITIME UDDANNELSER I DANMARK 2022-2024, (Rapport til Orient’s Fond, Forår 2025)

In the Maritime Research Alliance we work to strengthen maritime research and education across Danish universities and maritime academies. We are therefore pleased to present our 2025 report “Videregående maritime uddannelser i Danmark 2022–2024”, prepared for Orients Fond.

The report provides a comprehensive overview of maritime education activities at bachelor’s and master’s level across MRA’s 12 member institutions in the period 2022–2024. Its purpose is to document developments in enrolment, course offerings, and institutional engagement in maritime education, and to support strategic dialogue on how to further strengthen Denmark’s maritime knowledge base.

The findings show that seven of the twelve member institutions have offered dedicated maritime courses or programmes during the period.

At the maritime academies — SIMAC and MARTEC — overall enrolment has remained stable at a high level, with around 1,370–1,380 students annually across programmes such as Marine Engineering, Maritime Transport, and Naval Architecture.

At university level, five institutions have offered maritime courses or specialisations. The total number of course enrolments in maritime subjects increased significantly from 1,763 in 2022 to 2,335 in 2024 — an index increase from 100 to 132. This growth is particularly driven by developments at Copenhagen Business School and Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, where maritime business and technical programmes have expanded.

At the same time, the report highlights important nuances: differences in reporting methods between institutions, the closure and establishment of specific programmes, and the fact that course enrolment figures at universities may count the same student multiple times across subjects.

Overall, the report demonstrates that maritime education in Denmark remains robust and, at university level, growing. This reflects both sustained student interest and the strategic importance of maritime competencies in areas such as green transition, digitalisation, logistics, law, and engineering.

For MRA, this report is an important contribution to documenting the development of Denmark’s maritime education landscape and supporting informed decision-making among foundations, universities, and policymakers. We are proud to contribute to strengthening the knowledge foundation of one of Denmark’s most important global industries and look forward to continuing the collaboration with our member institutions and partners.
