PhD Network: Introduction to shipping for maritime PhD fellows

The MRA PhD network is organizing an event at CBS for PhD fellows who are interested in getting an introduction to the maritime sector. We will cover actors in the maritime sector, the shipping organization, the maritime regulatory landscape and the drivers of supply and demand in shipping. This event is for PhD fellows only.

On 18 February the MRA PhD network is organizing an afternoon session on introduction to shipping for maritime PhD fellows. The seminar is relevant to new PhD fellows who want an introduction to the maritime sector, experienced PhD fellows who want to know where their research fits into the bigger picture. Finally, it is relevant to PhD fellows who want to meet fellow junior scholars and build their network.

The instructor is Thomas Roslyng Olesen who has been teaching on maritime topics in the past 10 years at Copenhagen Business School and World Maritime University.

The maritime chain of transportation

Here we will introduce the different actors in the maritime sector in Denmark and abroad – different shipping segments, agents, brokers, and ports etc. We will also introduce the main activities of the shipping company – ownership of assets, technical management and commercial management models.

Maritime Governance

Here we will introduce the role of regulatory actors in the maritime sector at different levels of governance. IMO and ILO at the UNI level, EU at the supra national level, regional actors, port states, flag states and coastal states, and the role of private actors.

Maritime economics

Here we will introduce the drivers of supply and demand for international shipping and exemplify with recent developments in different segments.
