On 15 & 16 May 2025 Maritime Research Alliance is organizing a 2-days research festival at University of Southern Denmark in Odense.
Day 1 is for everyone with an interest in maritime research. During the day, maritime researchers from all over Denmark will present their ongoing research activities. This will be combined with panel debates with experts from the maritime research community on hot topics such green transition, geopolitics and digitalization. In the afternoon we will celebrate the 5 years anniversary of Maritime Research Alliance followed by a conference dinner.
Day 2 is an internal network day. Participation in this day is reserved for maritime researchers at the Danish universities, SIMAC, MARTEC, DIIS and the Maritime Museum. Throughout the day we will focus on cross disciplinary and cross institutional reseach collaboration and funding opportunities.
Participation is free for everyone (participants as well as presenters)
We hope to see you on one or both days.

Panel session 1: Geopolitics – impact on the maritime sector
In the past years the world has witnessed increased geopolitical uncertainty: Armed conflicts, territorial disputes, great power rivalry, and trade wars. As one of the most globalized sectors in the world, this development is particularly relevant for the maritime sector.
In this session debate we have invited experts from the Danish maritime research community to share their views on how the sector will be impacted by the geopolitical development. Specifically, we will explore how the increased great power rivalry and territorial disputes will affect the “rule based” world order in the future. We will discuss the implications for the sector of regional armed conflicts in key areas such as Yemen and Ukraine. And finally, we will discuss if our historical experiences with trade wars and other geopolitical uncertainties can give us some guidelines or insights concerning the ongoing development.
Panelists:
Professor Kristina Siig from department of Law at University of Southern Denmark
Senior Researcher Jessica Larsen from Danish Institute for International Studies
Associate professor Annette Skovsted Hansen, Department of Global Studies at Aarhus University
Keynote speaker, Historian, Economist and journalist Marc Levinson, Washington, US
Panel session 2: Green transition and bio-diversity in shipping
The maritime sector is currently undergoing one of the largest transformations in the history of shipping. The 2023 IMO Greenhouse Gas Strategy is aiming for net zero around 2050. This requires not only increased energy efficiency on existing vessels but also a dramatic upscaling of production of alternative fuels. In this session academic experts will discuss the outlook of the uptake of new fuels. We will discuss the competencies that are required to use these fuels. And finally, we will discuss the biodiversity dimension of the ongoing transition and how to forward a holistic green transformation of the sector.
Panelists:
Associate Professor Henrik-Sornn Friese, Department of Strategy and Innovation at Copenhagen Business School)
Postdoc Morten Tinning (Maritime Museum of Denmark)
Senior Researcher Mary Wisz, Section for Ecosystem based Marine Management, Technical University of Denmark
Signe Jensen, Head of Research, SDU/MARITEK
Panel session 3: AI and digitalization in the maritime sector
The collection of data and development of new digital technologies has gained pace in the maritime sector. In this session we will discuss if and how AI tools should be implemented. We will discuss how to use the vast amounts of data to increase the efficiency of maritime transportation. And we will discuss the challenges and opportunities of decision support systems and autonomous solutions on board vessels.
