The Baltic Sea serves as a critical corridor for both commercial and military purposes in Northern Europe and plays an essential role in trade and energy supply. However, concerns over potential confrontations in the Baltic Sea are mounting, with tensions already manifesting in the last few years through various forms of hybrid threats and escalations, including sabotage of pipelines, cyberattacks on maritime facilities, sanctions, and increased naval exercises.
The Baltic Sea is bordered by both established and newer NATO states as well as Russia. It has experienced increased political and military posturing, particularly since the onset of the war in Ukraine. Former dependencies on Russian gas have exposed lingering vulnerabilities, highlighting the interconnectedness of security and economic stability in the region. As Europe enters the third year of military conflict in Ukraine, what challenges and strategies lie ahead for maritime security in this vital region?
This seminar brings together scholars to examine the current situation from geopolitical, legal, and technological perspectives, aiming to understand the implications of rising tensions for the region’s vital common goods, including maritime security, navigational rights, trade, and energy supply chains.
